I’ve heard it said on numerous occasions, ” You live in the Arctic, you must not sweat” but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Sure we aren’t in shorts and a t-shirt with skin perspiring at the moment we set foot out the door…..but there is still plenty of sweat that happens in the north.

Try going for a walk on the snow covered tundra with layer upon layer of clothing hugging your body closely, hidden beneath a heavy down filled parka and minus 50 boots on your feet and then trudge up a hill (aka mountain) and see if your body does that without breaking a sweat πŸ˜‰.

You don’t have to be out hiking on the land to experience this either. Dress for the weather (appropriate parka, boots, hat, mitts etc) to go outside, but then run some indoor errands such Β as grocery shopping or waiting in line at the post office, and see how your body reacts to being bundled up while hanging out indoors πŸ˜‰.

And then there is good old fashioned hard physical labour. Exercise. House cleaning. You name it….it makes sweat happen (even in the Arctic)

As much as we would like to think otherwise, sweat is actually a good thing. It’s one of the body’s ways of pushing out toxins from our body and regulating our temperature. Just because it’s good for us doesn’t mean we like it though πŸ˜‰ There is a multi million dollar industry designed to sell us antiperspirants, deodorants, body washes and more to try to cover, stop, or hide the sweat. More and more people though (myself included) are starting to think twice about what they are putting onto their body (and thus absorbed into it) due to the health hazards that some of these products expose us to. Deodorant is one such product, and in an effort to reduce my family’s exposure to toxins I started exploring natural alternatives to the main stream chemical laden ones.

I spotted an ad in the local Breaktime News for a natural deodorant from Go Rogue Naturals and was curious as to what they offered. Made in Canada by two gals who had lived in Iqaluit for years, I knew they would know the needs of northerners and I loved their “no bad stuff” approach to the ingredients they use. So, I made an order and tried it out.

Ordering: Their website was easy to navigate and has a cheerful and refreshing feel. The information on why to consider using a natural deodorant is informative and presented in a casual, easy to read approach, as if having a conversation with a friend. Making my order was simple and by signing up for their email newsletter ahead of time I was able to get a discount code to save 10% off my first order. Yay!

Shipping: It took just over two weeks for my package to arrive (It is made in Halifax, Nova Scotia and ships from there) which was slightly faster than I had expected to receive it so that was great. They offer a flat rate shipping fee of $9.99 anywhere in Canada (including the North!) or FREE shipping with orders over $75

Presentation: It’s hard to make deodorant look “pretty” and be excited to open a package of it, but Go Rouge Naturals has obviously thought about those little details because the package was cute and cheerful and brightened my day. The labels on the deodorant sticks are whimsical, bright and cheerful and the polka dot tissue paper it was wrapped in was a nice touch. πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ’• Also, they smell amazing!!!

To put the deodorant to the test I took a week and tested it against the brands I had been using currently. Each day I wore the Go Rogue Naturals deodorant under one arm and the “competition” under the other to see how it stood up to the test.

I’m very active through the day and my work is physical so I break a sweat each day. So this was an excellent way to really see it’s effectiveness.

go rogue vs spray

On the first couple of days I tested it against another natural deodorant liquid spray. I normally used this spray whenever I had to apply right after getting out of the shower and shaving underarm….I hated the thought of using a chemical filled product underarm when the pores of the skin would be open and exposed and would absorb the product the quickest.

After a couple of days of testing (alternating the arm it was tested under ) I definitely felt that Go Rogue Naturals was more effective than the natural deodorant spray. It felt drier for longer and seemed to have the “freshness” last longer.

My next test was against an antiperspirant. In all fairness it’s not comparing apples to apples when you compare a deodorant with an antiperspirant since one is designed to prevent you from sweating and the other is designed to deal with the sweat. For the average person, though, it’s all about whether it works or not…..preventing embarrassing odours or situations, so I felt the test was still “fair”

I had expected it to be so easy to compare the effectiveness of the two contrasting products (antiperspirant vs natural deodorant) but it actually was a lot harder than I expected. Go Rogue Naturals puts up a good fight against sweat!

At the end of the day I would say the antiperspirant had reduced my sweating (but not eliminated it) but the Go Rogue Naturals deodorant had been extremely effective at dealing with the sweat that did happen and it did it with style and class and no chemicals πŸ˜‰ Go Rogue for the the win!

Bring it! Natural Deoderant

Trailblazer Natural DeoderantSince we haven’t mentioned it yet, let’s talk about the scent of the deodorant. I chose two scents that are uplifting (when you’re not a morning person you need all the help you can get, right?). I had selected their Trailblazer (minty) and Bring It (citrusy) bars. The are scented with natural essential oils and not with chemical fragrances and they smell AMAZING! They are both great but my fav of the two is the Bring It (like a rockstar). It is a blend of Orange, Lemon and Clary Sage. I use essential oils on a daily basis and I would not have thought of putting these three oils together…..but they got it bang on and it’s hard not to stand there sniffing the tube because the scent is so refreshing. πŸŠπŸ‹

I enjoyed putting these products to the test and was delightfully surprised at the punch Go Rogue Naturals packs. I found I applied more of the natural deodorant in comparison with the “competition” but I think it might just be because I loved the smell so much and because the base is coconut oil so as the body heat warmed it, it glided more easily.

Since trying these out, putting them to the test, and taking some time to educate myself about the ingredients in these vs the competition….I’ve now switched to using only Go Rogue Naturals deodorant and couldn’t be happier!

From a frugal perspective….the flat rate shipping of $9.99 makes buying one tube very pricey, but once you buy two or more (and the shipping doesn’t go up) it really becomes more affordable. If you were to buy for everyone in the family, or to go in on an order with friends… it would make shipping cost much more affordable (especially if you can get the order to $75 and get FREE shipping). Another great thing to remember is that they don’t charge GST so you are already saving 5% on every tube. And signing up for the newsletter saves you an additional 10% off your first order. Yay for savings.

I’m so happy I gave them a try and am relieved to have finally found a chemical free deodorant that finally works for me. If you want to try them out you can find them at GoRogueNaturals.com or on instagram @go_rogue_naturals
